New Ideas About the Cause, Spread and Therapy of Lyme Disease by Dr. James Howenstine
Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, July 2004

Transmission of the disease has been clearly documented after bites by fleas, mites, mosquitos and ticks. There is compelling evidence that Lyme disease (LD) can be spread by sexual and congenital transfer. One physician has cared for 5000 children with LD: 240 of these children were born with the disease. Dr. Charles Ray Jones, the leading pediatric specialist on Lyme Disease, has found 12 breastfed children who have developed LD. Miscarriage, premature births, stillbirths, birth defects, and transplacental infection of the fetus have all been reported. Studies at the University of Vienna have found Bb in urine and breast milk of LD mothers.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin have reported that dairy cattle can be infected with Bb, hence milk could be contaminated. Bb can also be transmitted to lab animals by oral intake such as food.

The Sacramento, California blood bank thinks that LD can be spread by blood transfusions. The CDC (Center of Disease Control) in Atlanta, Georgia states that their data indicates that Bb can survive the blood processing techniques used for transfusions in the US.
Lyme Disease is the fastest growing epidemic in the world. LD is grossly under-reported so there may be far more than the 200,000 cases reported annually in the US. Drs. Harvey and Salvato estimate that 1 billion persons in the world may be infected with LD. LD is thought to be a contributing factor in 50% of patients who have chronic illness.

Article:
Methods of Lyme Disease Transmission
"First, the arthropod is not the exclusive vector of Lyme disease. In addition to ticks, Borrelia burgdorferi may be carried and transmitted by fleas, mosquitos, and mites. Second, Lyme disease is not exclusively vector-borne. Compelling evidence supports horizontal (sexual) and vertical (congenital) human to human transfer."

"Citing limitations of laboratory tests for the detection of antibodies to Borrelia, a study was conducted in 1995 at the University of Vienna (Austria) for the detection of Borrelia. Utilizing polymerase chain reaction testing for DNA, Borrelia was found to be present in both the urine and breast milk of patients previously diagnosed with Lyme disease.A study conducted at the Sacramento (California) Medical Foundation Blood Center in 1989 states that there is evidence that the transmission of Borrelia is possible by blood transfusion. Furthermore, in 1990, a study by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia stated that the data demonstrates that Borrelia burgdorferi can survive the blood processing procedures normally applied to transfused blood in the USA."

Current laboratory diagnosis of Lyme borreliosis relies on tests for the detection of antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi with known limitations. By using a simple extraction procedure for urine samples, B. burgdorferi DNA was amplified by a nested PCR with primers that target the specific part of the flagellin gene. To control possible inhibition of the enzyme (polymerase), a special assay using the same primers was developed. We examined 403 urine samples from 185 patients with skin manifestations of Lyme borreliosis. Before treatment, B. burgdorferi DNA was detected in 88 of 97 patients with Lyme borreliosis. After treatment, all but seven patients became nonreactive. Six of these seven persons suffered from intermittent migratory arthralgias or myalgias, and one from acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans. Two of 49 control patients with various dermatologic disorders and none out of 22 presumably healthy persons were reactive in the PCR. In addition to urine, breast milk from two lactating women with erythema migrans was tested and also found reactive. Borrelia burgdorferi DNA can be detected with high sensitivity (91%) by a nested PCR in urine of patients with Lyme borreliosis. In addition, this test can be a reliable marker for the efficacy of treatment.

Sexual transmission Some patients have long believed that they contracted Lyme sexually. The CDC adamantly denies that Lyme disease can be transmitted sexually. The CDC assumes that these are cases in which family members, exposed to the same environment, have each been bitten by a tick.

Many doctors who treat thousands of Lyme patients have seen evidence that Lyme can be sexually transmitted, based on the histories of their patients.

In 2011, the first documented case of an insect-borne disease being transmitted sexually was reported in the Journal of Emerging Infectious Diseases. Although this was a virus and not the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, it has raised questions in the Lyme community.

It may be many years before this debate is settled.

Наконец-то они тронули лед... Не прошло и сто лет...
Lyme Disease May Be Sexually Transmitted, Study Suggests
Presented at the Western Regional Meeting of the American Federation for Medical Research, Carmel, CA, January 25, 2014.

The Lyme spirochete resembles the agent of syphilis, long recognized as the epitome of sexually transmitted diseases. Last summer the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that Lyme disease is much more common than previously thought, with over 300,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the United States. That makes Lyme disease almost twice as common as breast cancer and six times more common than HIV/AIDS.

“Our findings will change the way Lyme disease is viewed by doctors and patients,” said Marianne Middelveen, lead author of the study presented in Carmel. “It explains why the disease is more common than one would think if only ticks were involved in transmission.”

In the study, researchers tested semen samples and vaginal secretions from three groups of patients: control subjects without evidence of Lyme disease, random subjects who tested positive for Lyme disease, and married heterosexual couples engaging in unprotected sex who tested positive for the disease.
As expected, all of the control subjects tested negative for Borrelia burgdorferi in semen samples or vaginal secretions. In contrast, all women with Lyme disease tested positive for Borrelia burgdorferi in vaginal secretions, while about half of the men with Lyme disease tested positive for the Lyme spirochete in semen samples. Furthermore, one of the heterosexual couples with Lyme disease showed identical strains of the Lyme spirochete in their genital secretions.
“The presence of the Lyme spirochete in genital secretions and identical strains in married couples strongly suggests that sexual transmission of the disease occurs,” said Dr. Mayne.

Dr. Stricker pointed to the unknown risks of contracting Lyme disease raised by the study.
“There is always some risk of getting Lyme disease from a tickbite in the woods,” he said. “But there may be a bigger risk of getting Lyme disease in the bedroom.”

Willy Burgdorfer, PhD, MD (Hon)
Rocky Mountain Laboratories
National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

Increase Evidence Of Mosquito / Spirochete Associations

The recent demonstration and isolation of spirochetes (including the Lyme disease agent, Borrelia afzelii) in and from Aedes and Culexmosquitoes in southern Moravia (Czech Republic) promoted this short review of literature pertaining to the association of spirochetes with mosquitoes.

Reports as early as 1904 describe the presence of spirochetes in intestinal tracts of larval mosquitoes as well as in malpighian tubules and salivary glands of adult Culex, Anopheles and Aedes mosquitoes. Yet, there is no information as to the ability of these insects to transmit spirochetes by bite. An exception is a report on the successful transmission of Borrelia anserina by experimentally infected Aedes aegypti. Similar experimental infection and transmission studies of the Lyme disease agent Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto in three species of mosquitoes (Ae. aegypti, Ae. atropalpus, Ae. triseriatus) showed the duration of spirochetal infections in the intestinal tracts of these insects to be ephemeral and not involving salivary gland tissues. In contrast are the recent reports from southern Moravia where over-wintering Aedesand Culex have been found naturally infected with spirochetes. One strain isolated from Ae. vexans was identified as B. afzelii, two other strains from C. pipiens molestus appeared to be new hitherto undescribed spirochetes. Studies are in progress to determine whether these spirochetes produce in their mosquito vectors systemic infections including the tissues of salivary glands from where they could be transmitted via saliva during feeding on animal hosts and possibly humans.

Omg!
